I'm having 20 folks to my house on Thanksgiving. I've certainly done other gatherings, parties, and celebrations, but I've never before been lucky enough to create Thanksgiving. My intention is to make it about so much more than the turkey and pumpkin pie. I really want to celebrate the Thanks in Thanksgiving.

I was just wondering if anyone has any rituals they really love around gratitude on this wonderful holiday?

For the last 8 or 10 years we've donated at least 1, usually 2, complete Thanksgiving Dinners. We supply all the fixings, and let the recipients cook them up with their own love :) We donate to the families that have just come out of the battered women's shelter, the local food bank, people we've heard of through local churches, and individuals we know of personally that are in need. It's been a great way not only to show my gratitude that we have enough to be able to give, but also a wonderful way of instilling a true appreciation of the meaning of the holiday in my children.

Tuesday was the day we donated our two dinners this year, and it feels just as great every time we do it!

Hi Daryn:

Thanksgiving is known as "The Superbowl" in my house. The reason? My husband, Buff, is a TREMENDOUS cook. He starts days ahead of time, ordering meats from a smokehouse in Texas, laying out the menu, meticulously planning everything down to the wire. In the end, he has masterminded an amazing feast!

As for me, it's the Superbowl, because I feel like a linebacker when it's all over! I am so looking forward to it.

My birthday is tomorrow, Nov. 25, so we always celebrate Thanksgiving and my birthday together with candles in the pumpkin pie. And for the past few years with Lucky Break Wishbones too!

This year, I'm far from home and family. I accepted a writing assignment in Spain and have been traveling the country and writing a video script. In the midst of the deadline pressure, I took Thanksgiving Day off to walk the streets of Toledo, Spain. Wow, what a beautiful city. As I worked my way through the narrow streets and the historic sites, I felt thankful to be able to see the world and learn about other cultures. I will never forget the beauty of such places as Toledo, Segovia, the Basque Country, and Asturias. My soul has been refreshed, and my life will forever be blessed because of this trip.
