I live in Pine, Az with my husband, Richard, who is a disabled veteran from the Vietnam War. I am learning a great deal about birds here. I now have 3 feeding stations set up to observe birds in my yard. We love to sit and watch them. It's funny because in our former home in Phoenix I had no interest in birds at all, in fact, I figured they would bring diseases and didn't want them. I feel bad because my mom, who lived with us there, (she was 90 yoa) loved them so much. I wish I had done more to share my mother's love of birds with her. Now I understand. If she is watching me she must be very pleased. Now I am the pineconegirl of Pine (I say girl, because I am the youngest one on the Cookbook Committee for the 30th Anniversary of Pine-Strawberrt Arts and Crafts Guild! I'm the baby). I am also busy pursuing my love of pine cones by making totally pine cone wreaths.I never thought I had a crafty bone in my body! There are always pine cones all over my yard, and I got this idea when I saw a flower in an antique shop that was made from a pine cone. I thought "I could do that". Then my mind just took off on all the things I could make with pine cones. It's funny the creativity that is coming out of me up here that I never would have dreamed that I had when I lived the life in the fast lane in the city.I'm loving life in beautiful Pine, Arizona.

Linda Jo Royal said… - Joy, skunks may be your friends, as they eat the larvae of the Japanese beatles. "Skunk-Off " is a commercial product that you might find @ a hardware or agricultural store, or possibly @ the vet's. Maybe it's not available out West, but hope you can find it where you live..Skunks are very plentiful here in W. Pa. where we live, so we can find the product easily enough. P.S. Where is Pine, Az. located from Phoenix? Far enough , hopefully! Sounds peaceful with the mountains you mentioned. When my husband, Jeff finishes his Practical Nursing school, in June 2010, we plan to relocate out West, hopefully to Red-Rock country near where my dear sister & her family live in Central Utah. - Hi Joy, thanks for your comment; we live in the country, & last year our Husky, Misty also got sprayed by a skunk! There's many of those around this area~~I have "skunk-off" product & also have used tomato juice to combat this. Misty isn't fond of anything to do with a bath & it took both my husband & me to try to make her presentable to society (& the house) again! lol All 3 dogs are indoor pets..Sweetpea is a "silky" min. daschund who doesn't shed @ all. Can't say that about the other 2! P.S. My wild birds are quite picky, & only like black-oil sunflower seed. I'm a retired LPN & worked with my alzheimer patients exclusively for 12 years. Where we live is "Amish" country, & they're great neighbors! There is so much beauty to be found in the world..& I have friends from grade-school & high school & we see each other frequently.. Unfortunately, I love crafts, but can't make them! My flowers are wild, & return each year to my flower bed. I have a disability with my back which was work-related, not unusual with nurses. Hope you have a beautiful day, & that its not too hot in Pine, Az.! I do know it is in Phoenix!! Linda Jo Royal
